On June 19, 1865, two years after President Abe Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, word finally made it to Texas that all enslaved people “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”

Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S., and reminds us how much work still must be done to create racial and economic reconciliation in our nation.

In a country where it is too easy to be against something, Juneteenth calls us to do the harder work of standing up for something. Standing up for:

HEALING FOR ALL who no longer want to be dragged down by our past & by their pain.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL who are ready to put in the work & are willing to make sacrifices to make the world a better place.

LOVE FOR ALL because that’s the only way to make things right.

& FREEDOM FOR ALL because oppression is unjust & hope is a human right.
